John
Edwards Response | ||||||
| “John
Edwards believes that the United States should work with our allies to
develop a long-term plan to help bring change to the Middle East.
This will be a challenging but crucial effort. We cannot achieve peace
alone, nor should we expect meaningful change immediately. But the
alternative is more of the same, and is no longer an option. Right now,
we are alienating the very people who can help America most: the
segment of the population who is open to supporting the West. The
moderate elements see America's refusal to push for an Arab-Israeli
peace and embrace of regional dictatorships as a sign that the United
States is anti-Arab and anti-Muslim, and we must work to defeat this
impression and achieve peace.
By working with our allies, we can develop a long-term plan to help
bring change to the Middle East. America must stand with our long-time
ally Israel to establish a plan for peace. But, John Edwards also
believe moderate elements in Palestine can also play a role in finding a
real solution. By working with leaders and groups in Palestine that
renounce terrorism and recognize Israel, we can work together toward
peace.
Last year, John Edwards traveled to Israel and met with both Israeli and
Palestinian leaders. This voyage marked my third visit to the region. I
have witnessed firsthand the many opportunities to work together toward
a resolution. Change will not occur overnight, but through international
cooperation, we can work toward the roadmap for success.”
