Bad
Bird Luck | ||||||
| I’ve
had a strange string of bad luck with birds. Being an animal lover I find
it both odd and disturbing. The bad luck began when I was taking care of
a neighbor’s three pet ducks on break from college several years
ago. Their one female duck was about my age at the time, which is old for
a duck. She was having trouble walking and after a few days refused to
eat, obviously a bad sign. I went home upset and not sure what to do. I
called a vet, but they didn’t take care of ‘farm animals’.
My father seeing that I was troubled said, “Well I don’t think
it was very nice of them to leave you with a duck that is about to expire.” Unfortunately,
the duck did only had a few days left. While sad, the strange part was
just starting. In that same week a bird hit my windshield near the local
high school. Then one night after feeding the two remaining ducks I turned
out of the driveway only to slam on the breaks as a small bird started
to
walk
in
front of the car. Fortunately the bird was unharmed,
but instead of flying away he just continued to walk across the street.
Now things were odd. To add to this string of bad bird luck, a couple weeks
later when helping my sister move I couldn’t help but run over a
seagull that had already died in the street. That was just the start of
my bird incidents. A couple
years later I was driving my father to work when two starlings (I believe)
were chasing each other then dove strait down into my car. My father yelled, “You
nailed them both!” While he sounded proud, I was disgusted. “No,
I didn’t mean to,” was all I could say. All of this was very
disconcerting, as normally I think I am good with animals, and it seemed
like birds were committing suicide all around me. One of the most bizarre
cases was one morning I was driving along and saw some movement on the
right side of the road. Yet again I had to slam on my brakes as a turkey
came sprinting across the road, continued running past my car down the
street and into the woods. He appeared to be in a huge rush. Unfortunately
there are additional incidents where the birds didn’t fare as well
as the turkey. It doesn’t seem to be the car as it has happened in
a couple different cars, it just seems that I have bad bird luck.
